Tory MP says he was deported from Djibouti due to criticisms of China
Sun, 28 Apr 2024 21:19:24 GMT
Tim Loughton had sanctions imposed on him in 2021 by Beijing, which has close ties to east African country
A former government minister who has had sanctions imposed on him by China has said he was detained and deported by Djibouti as a âdirect consequenceâ of the east African countryâs close ties with Beijing.
Tim Loughton, the Conservative MP for East Worthing and Shoreham since 1997, said he was held for more than seven hours at the airport earlier this month, barred entry to Djibouti, and told he was being removed on the next available flight.

Tensions high at Columbia University after protesters defy deadline to leave â live
Mon, 29 Apr 2024 20:34:03 GMT
Pro-Palestinian protesters joined by Columbia faculty after 2pm ET ultimatum to leave or face suspension passes
Last week, Joe Biden vowed to take another stab at convincing Congress to pass legislation that would allow him to tighten immigration policy and deter new migrants from entering the United States.
But Politico reports that nothing significant appears to be in the works â a consequences of the opposition from Donald Trump and his Republican allies in Congress that would likely kill any compromise reached on the highly divisive issue:
Talks around resuscitating the bipartisan border compromise that senators struck in February have been nonexistent in Washington. And despite the presidentâs proclamation, administration officials and immigration policy experts both say itâs highly unlikely any legislative momentum for border security materializes between now and November.
âThey pulled a rabbit out of a hat on Ukraine, but thereâs no chance theyâre getting anything out of Mike Johnsonâs House on border security,â said an immigration advocate familiar with the White Houseâs thinking, granted anonymity to discuss private conversations with administration officials. âTheyâve known that since December, when they realized they had to count votes in the House. Thereâs no chance of legislation on this, and they know that. Itâs rhetorical posturing.â
In the short term, the two leaders ordered their national security teams to work together to immediately implement concrete measures to significantly reduce irregular border crossings while protecting human rights. President Biden and President LĂłpez Obrador also pledged to advance initiatives to address the root causes of migration throughout the Western Hemisphere, noting that increasing shared prosperity and security will be of critical importance in effectively addressing the migration challenge over the longer term.

White House correspondentsâ dinner weekend: top five parties, by food
Mon, 29 Apr 2024 19:36:36 GMT
Waffles and caviar for breakfast, fish and chips for dinner. The Guardianâs reviewer digests a social week in Washington
The annual White House correspondentsâ dinner in Washington is ostensibly about the dinner poking fun at the president. But like the Oscars, or the Met Gala, itâs also about the parties.
But how to decide which parties to attend and which ones to skip? Every day of the White House correspondentsâ dinner weekend is now inundated with competing events.
The rules were as follows: two food options were chosen at random at each party, and given a score out of 10 based on taste and execution. The parties reviewed were cocktail parties only; sit-down dinners were not included. Where the primary reviewer could not attend, a secondary reviewer sent notes. The final list was submitted to a three-judge âappeals panelâ made up of longtime MSNBC contributors, though the ranking could only be overturned in the event of plain error by the reviewer. The rankings were not overturned.
Events not reviewed: Washington Women in Journalism awards ceremony, White House Foreign Press-Meridien party, WME-Puck party, Washingtonian/embassy of Qatar soiree, Politics and Inclusion dinner, Washington AI Network-TGI Friday lunch, Substack New Media party.

PFAS increase likelihood of death by cardiovascular disease, study shows

For the first time, researchers have formally shown that exposure to toxic PFAS increases the likelihood of death by cardiovascular disease, adding a new level of concern to the controversial chemicalsâ wide use.
The findings are especially significant because proving an association with death by chemical exposure is difficult, but researchers were able to establish it by reviewing death records from northern Italyâs Veneto region, where many residents for decades drank water highly contaminated with PFAS, also called âforever chemicalsâ.

Liverpool have run out of steam. But Kloppâs legacy is already cemented | Jonathan Wilson
Mon, 29 Apr 2024 14:06:53 GMT
An end-of-season wobble has ended any hopes of a dream send off. But itâs characteristic of Kloppâs managerial career
And so there will be no glorious farewell for JĂźrgen Klopp. Saturdayâs 2-2 draw with West Ham, coupled with victories for Manchester City and Arsenal, means any realistic hope of a second Premier League title is effectively over. Klopp is exhausted, his team is exhausted and the manic emotional energy that gripped the side during the League Cup final and immediately after has dissipated.
There will be questions about the wisdom of revealing when he did that he would be leaving. This has been a truism if English soccer since Alex Ferguson announced in 2001 that he planned to quit Manchester United. Do that, even if youâre as fearsome a figure as Ferguson, and the danger is that authority wanes. Something similar seems to have happened with Emma Hayes, who will leave Chelsea Women in the summer after a hugely successful 12-year stint to take charge of the USWNT. Would Saturdayâs touchline spat with Mohamed Salah have happened had the Egyptian thought that Klopp would still be his manager next season? (It now seems likely that Salah, who has only a year left on his contract, will also leave in the summer).

Fostering is getting a shot of much-needed millennial energy â just ask Kiri Pritchard-McLean | Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett
Mon, 29 Apr 2024 12:00:10 GMT
With Britain crying out for foster carers, my schoolfriendâs comedy show sheds light on what itâs like for those in their 30s
What do you do if you always imagined a house full of children, but donât want to be a biological parent? This was the dilemma facing one of my schoolfriends, the standup comedian Kiri Pritchard-McLean, who lives on Ynys MĂ´n (Anglesey) with her partner. Like many people in their 30s, they were surrounded by friends embroiled in the maelstrom of babies and young children. But the prevailing narratives around motherhood didnât really speak to Kiri, nor did the hard, thankless work of it appeal to her (to quote one of her jokes, âI see what my friends have got, and itâs the fucking Manson family ⌠chaos, violence, no oneâs washing their hair, everyoneâs talking about sacrifice. It is a cult.â)
Foster caring isnât something that many millennials consider â the largest age group of carers are people in their 50s â but when Kiri and her partner heard an advert on the radio appealing for more carers, it felt right. In her new show, Peacock, she talks about the vetting process, which included many hours of training and more than 60 hours of interviews. Rather than being put off by how exhaustive the recruitment is, though, there was something reassuring about it. There are no qualifications for becoming a biological parent, no exam you have to sit, and no real way of knowing if youâll be good at it before you embark. I, for example, naively thought that having been a young carer for my brother, and later an au pair, an aunt and a godmother, would mean I would be somewhat prepared for motherhood. Yet nothing truly prepares you, and you are humbled in profound, often mortifying, ways.
